Nature on Stage
Local Actions
Local actions are projects and programmes to restore, sustainably manage and protect ecosystems in the Italian territory. They contribute to mitigation and adaptation, as evidence of the link between the climate crisis and nature based solutions, to reduce its impacts. The portfolio of actions is wide and includes, for example, citizens' collective actions to protect land in built areas, biodiversity conservation, wetlands restoration in agricultural areas, rewilding of rivers and adopting close to nature silviculture.?In Italy land and soil consumption continues at an alarming rate: in 2022, 2.4 square metres are built every second. In a year 77 square km of land have been built.

Selected actions are featured by a specific driver and with a high social, climatic and environmental impact. In some cases actions recognise the value of an ecosystem service, as in the case of credits of sustainability or carbon credits. A careful analysis of the methodologies is carried out, to avoid green washing.

Selected actions are often inspirational and can anticipate climate and biodiversity targets, as requested by the new EU nature restoration law. Citizens groups, NGOs, policy makers and enterprises are often engaged in these actions, to highlight the potential of action in all walks of society.
