Silvia Stefanelli was born in Udine in 1967. She holds a degree in Forestry Science cum laude at the University of Padua and a Master in Ecological Economics at the University of Edinburgh, where she lived for a few years.
In the last 15 years she specialized in global and local instruments to address the climate crisis, market based mechanisms, policies and regulatory aspects. She is a specialist of land and forest based solutions and carbon removals in the compliance and voluntary sector.
She set up with a team of researchers and policy makers a local carbon market in Italy to supply forest carbon offset and PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services). She also has a deep knowledge of carbon standards and MRV issues, accrued working for International Carbon Standards like Plan Vivo and with continuous training on carbon reporting, accounting and monitoring at the UNFCCC and the GreenHouse Gas Protocol.

From 2017 to 2019 she worked for the European Commission, DG Clima contributing to the Regulation on Land Use Land use Change and Forestry, the negotiations on deforestation regulation and the EU Taxonomy.
She joined two climate UNFCCC COP in 2017 and 2018, as part of the EU Commission delegation.
She also has developed financial and management skills in the low carbon economy. Since 2007 she is regularly called by the EU Commission as an expert in various domains: from carbon reduction technologies, low carbon technologies for SMEs, the role of forests in carbon sequestration, sustainable bioenergy. She has been appointed member of the UNFCCC roster of experts on REDD+, to assess the efforts of Parties to address deforestation.
Throughout her career she led several international projects on sustainable energy communities, managed private and public forest properties according to high sustainability and biodiversity standards and ran her personal environment consultancy.
She is also an expert of risk management having led rangers to monitor avalanche and fire risks.
She engaged in climate communication through conferences, discussion groups, articles, climate activism.
She is a keen traveler and explorer, having visited, often solo traveling, very remote areas of the world in South America, South East Asia, Africa Europe, Australia, Africa in remote forests and villages, getting lost in forests!
She practices ski touring and mountaineering, having climbed some of the most difficult climbing routes in the Dolomiti. This passion was rewarded with the admission to Club Alpino Accademico Italiano.
