Luca Mercalli is an Italian climatologist and academic, president of the Italian Meteorological Association.
He is the author of more than 100 scientific papers. His research fields include climate and glaciers variations on the Alps, but also climate mitigation and adaptation. He set up the Meteorological magazine Nimbus. He is also a tireless communicator on the urgency to act against the climate crisis. He regularly holds conferences and joins debates on global warming.
He wrote several books on the subject of the climate crisis. He also recalls the importance of stopping soil consumption in Italy, a problem that still faces problems to be tackled seriously.
A well known quote by dr. Mercalli is “We cannot negotiate with the physics of climate”, a reminder not to postpone climate actions to the future.
Beyond his undoubted scientific and communication skills, he is a deeply engaged citizen that leads by example. His lifestyle is consistent with his beliefs and his climate messages: he owns a highly energy efficient house in Val di Susa, almost self sufficient for energy and water. He has reduced flights to travel to almost zero and uses an EV.
